Introducing Korean Alphabet (2) Vowels

teacher.abby 2022. 8. 10. 12:34

Hanguel has 21 vowels. Vowels, unlike consonants, can be used alone to form syllables.

Vowels are formed with ' · ', 'ㅣ,' 'ㅡ' representing the sky, the human, and the earth respetively. In general, they are divided into monophthongs and diphthongs.

Korean vowels

In the picture above, 8 vowels (ㅏ,ㅓ,ㅗ,ㅜ,ㅡ,ㅣ,ㅐ,ㅔ) in the first line are monophtongs. Your mouth shape does not change when you pronounce these vowels.

The second and third lines have diphthongs. To pronounce these vowels, you need to change your mouth shape.

Diphthongs in the second line are combination of the vowel ㅣ and the ㅏ,ㅓ,ㅗ,ㅜ,ㅐ,ㅔ. When you pronounce these vowels, simply start with 'ㅣ' and then quickly move to the next vowel.
